Historical project: Global Woods initiated reforestation in 2002 and ended all involvement in 2022.
About this project
In 2002 we were invited by the Ugandan Ministry of Environment to reforest the Kikonda Forest Reserve. Since then, more than 8 million trees have been planted, covering an area larger than 10,000 soccer fields.
The project is located in northwestern Uganda, in the province of Hoima. Although the area was designated for reforestation by the Ugandan government already in the 1960s, the reforestation goals were never reached. In 2002, we acquired a tree planting license for the area and began reforestation efforts. Today, the project encompasses an eligible planting area of 7,321 ha alongside a conservation area of 4,861 hectares. The reforestation supports a sustainable timber industry, sequesters carbon, and provides vital habitat for many species, as highlighted in various FSC reports.
In 2010, we handed over the responsibility of the project to a Danish forest investment fund that transferred the project ownership to a Ugandan family-owned business in 2020. From 2013 to 2022, we were one of several companies that brokered carbon credits from the project. Since 2022, we have ended all involvement in the Kikonda Forest Reserve project.
